What is Newcomers?

Private: NewcomersRFSL

Have you applied for asylum or did you just come to Sweden? Are you gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or intersex? Do you want to meet new friends and learn about the LGBTQI community here?

RFSL Newcomers is a network for and with asylum seekers, undocumented immigrants and newly arrived LGBTQ people in Sweden. Our members come from all parts of the world and have often fled persecution in their native country because of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. RFSL Örebro has its own association  for Newcomers for people living in Örebro County.

Newcomers was created as a reaction to a need for activities, support and guidance as many asylum seeking LGBTQ individuals feel that they neither get support nor information about their rights upon their arrival in Sweden. Today, Newcomers is a support group as well as a social meeting space and a location for community information. We organize regular members meetings with activities and information as well as counselling. Our goal is to strengthen our members identities and voices by creating meeting spaces where they can share experiences, make contacts and meet friends.

With Newcomers we want to offer a safe meeting space where our members can meet, claim their space and be heard. We meet in the afternoons every other monday uneven weeks at RFSL Örebro. We arrange everything from café and outdoor activities to swimming lessons and lectures. We also have phone hours where we can refer you to the right help with for example issues related to asylum. Newcomers are also welcome to contact the counselors of RFSL Örebro for booking counselling sessions, an interpreter is available if needed.
